Medicare Part C

Medicare Advantage

Another Option
Together, Medicare Parts A and B are known as Original Medicare and are administered by the government.  Medicare Part C (also known as Medicare Advantage) are plans offered by private insurance companies.  These plan will replace the coverage offered by Medicare Parts A and B and usually include prescription drug benefits like those offered in Medicare Part D.

A Medicare Advantage Plan closes the gaps in coverage that are otherwise filled by a Medicare Supplement Plan. Basically, this one plan is a more convenient and often less expensive alternative for your healthcare coverage.

How it Works
Medicare Advantage plans provide cost effective coverage by contracting with doctors and hospitals in your area.  The plans are similar to an HMO where you have a primary care physician (PCP).  If you need to see a specialist, your PCP will make the referral to keep your medical care coordinated.

Some Medicare Advantage plans allow broader choices of healthcare providers through a PPO plan. These plans allow coverage out of the network and usually carry a higher co-payment.

Additional Benefits
Most Medicare Advantage plans offer additional benefits to their plans including Dental, Vision and Hearing coverage. Depending on qualifications, some plans also offer meals, transportation, over- the-counter allowance, and grocery allowances. Some plans even reimburse Medicare Part B costs.

Some Limitations
Under a Medicare Advantage Plan, your medical coverage is supplied by the group of medical professionals associated with your plan. Being treated by doctors or hospitals outside of your assigned area will either not be covered or coverage will be greatly reduced. However,  emergency treatment outside of your area is usually covered at a reduced rate but, only in the United States.  No foreign coverage is provided.
